Learning to Fly – Hour 53 GST Revision continued

By GT - Posted on 13 November 2008

A week ago, I put together a traditional wing trolley, you know the one, it’s the type with the wing already erected.. this was so that I could rig up Gunny better myself and give up a little more hanger space.

Well, I must admit the moving around of the wing is much much easer, but the wheels I reallocated to the new trolley are somewhat two tall, so fitting the wing to Gunny, is somewhat tight to say the least, so I need to make a mod, to some how lower the wheels about three inches.

So Gunny’s fully rigged and off we set for another hour of (“You need to polish that up as well, before your test GT, it needs to be perfect”) revision.  However, I don’t know what’s wrong with me because I cannot seem to get the following right.

  • Speeding up and slowing down whilst maintaining the same height
  • Standard Stall Recovery
  • Pitch only Recovery
  • Stalling in a turn Recovery
  • Maintaining a said height whilst in a turn.

All these, a few months back, I could do, now, because of the test, I continue to fuck them up, and Both Rob & I are not happy.

Speeding up and slowing down whilst maintaining the same height
I know the theory, slowly build up your speed, and pull the bar back to maintain, level flight. 6 out of 10 times I do it, the other 4 times I am up 60ft, down 20ft, its like being on a bloody roller coaster. What I need to do, I continue to say to myself, is relax and as soon as there is a alteration in the height adjust either the bar or the power or both to sort out the problem. No, what do I do, well I let it drop, or climb then try to sort it out, …. Oh Bugger!

Standard Stall Recovery

Again the drill, into the stall, as soon as the nose drops, centralise the bar and at the same time hit the gas, and raise the nose into the climb… What do I do, well I either pull the bar back to much and the Gs are pulling at you helmet, whilst hurtling towards the ground at mach 1, or I fail to increase power right away, which fails to initiate the recovery right away. We are not talking long here, fractions of a second, but it, as been imposed on me that it needs to be better.. Tossa!

Pitch only Recovery

This one is the funniest, again the drill into the stall, bar back, let the air speed pick up, once enough speed, raise the nose to level flight. …. Oh no, not me, what do I do, Bar back, build up speed, and then raise the nose to much every time. However, its not that we go up and down like a fucking yoyo, but I then have to readjust my height a little…Wanker!

Stalling in a turn Recovery

I can do this one reader, but what I seem to fowl up is the actual degree of the turn, it is either too much or too little, cant seem to the right angle for this one, no matter how often Rob tells me, god I must be a right un!

Maintaining a said height whilst in a turn

The problem here, is that I am not at a level when I start the turn, so I again have to compensate whilst in the turn, and therefore, yep you guessed it I ether lose height or gain it… fuck wit!

To conclude, A lot of the time I do get things right and feel good about the session, but to be frank, its hard (well I find it hard) to be perfect, and this will be my down fall if I cannot get the above right.

I believe, I am a safe rookie in the air, and will continue to be so, but I cannot get my head round, how ruddy hard this test is, or is it me. The current Mrs Taylor as said many a time, your not trying hard enough both with my flight training and being a husband, so I suppose I will just have to try harder, and pin these areas down…. God knows, I do fucking try, but man, sometimes I feel a complete Muppet!

Happy Landings

Try and approach it like riding your bike for the rospa or iam test. Relax and get in the flow, it will come.
