Learning to Fly – Hour 51 & More GST Revision
I know the reasons behind GST Revision, but I find it so bloody frustrating. This is because you go through all the basics, Stalls, Turns, Descending etc, etc and then you don’t touch them really for a months, and then its game on again, and you have to revisit all of them again, and get them so polished up, to the point that your instructor can see his face in them… Phew a tall call if you ask me.. Anyway enough of my friggen moaning, I suppose I best write the blog for today.
It was a winter wonderland when I arrived at Plaistow’s, it had snowed the night before and there was about two inches of frosty stuff everywhere, and Alex Craven my mate, was already there, flying around in the new Quik R (Lucky Twat) with Rob Grimwood
By time I arrived at the airfield, Alex’s second Cross Country Run had been knocked on the head due to pending incoming weather, feeling pretty pissed off with the weather gods, he did a couple of circuits and put his bird away, and went back to work.. poor lad!
By this time I had wheeled Gunny out, by heck she looks like a farm tractor (covered in mud), I will have to give her a good scrub when it dries up. With the wing fitted, it was off to do more revision, today it was stalls again.
OK GT flying at 2000ft (QNH) I want you to do a medium 360 turn to the right please, ok Rob! After completing the turn, all that was said was that I should look at the front more, as opposed to looking around and that would help me with judging the angle better. These turns I did for 10 mins or so then went onto 45 degree turns. I had learned my lesson from the other day, and carried out a HSELL check. I carried out the turn, but like I twat I lost height, and that was because I didn’t put enough pressure on the bar… wanker!
We then carried out a few more stalls, which I screwed up “not bloody quick enough on the bar GT”, for fuck sake I thought, months ago you could do these real easy, look at you now, its like you have just started to fly… tuh!
I then did a few speeding up and slowing down jobbies, this also needs to be refined as I sometimes loose height or gain it slightly, and as I was told, “it needs to be spot on GT, it needs to be perfect… oh bugger…
The session was completed by me showing Rob, how not to do a the maneuver to reach the point of the incipient stall… we were wobbling to left, wobbling to the right, I felt like me and Rob were the chuckle brothers, “to me, to you, to you to me”, finally I got it together and got a pat on the back.
OK lets go home mate, said Rob, Roger that sarcastically I said
Points too sort out:
- Make sure I carry out LIFE checks every 10 mins
- Carry out HSELL checks prior to any 45 & 60 degree turns
- Make sure that I am at a level attitude prior to turning
- Make sure that I exert pressure on the bar when in a turn
- Make sure I look forward when in a turn
To conclude, maybe I am trying too hard, maybe I am putting pressure on myself, maybe I want this too much…… of course I want it, I want so much, mmmmm that may well be my problem…
We shall see what happens on my next session…
Happy Landings

GT, your blogs are great, you should publish them somewhere seriously.
It's amazing how we both seem to do the same things on our lessons and forget the same things etc.
Anyway, hang in there R Kid, it (fingers crossed) wont be long now and we'll both be proud owners of a gleaming golden ticket.
Speak soon, pray for some sunshine and calm mate! Bloody rain!
Me
All the best and happy flying! Onwards and upwards! To....er....the end of the three-zero and beyond!
